Veterinary Science

The Official Veterinarian Designation Course fulfils the requirements of legislation (EU2019/624) to provide qualified veterinary surgeons to undertake the enforcement role within licensed meat premises, including abattoirs and cutting plants (EU2019/627). 
 
The course covers a 10-day period, is interactive and, at present, delivered on-line. It is a mixture of read only presentations, narrated presentations provided as PowerPoint slideshows and MP4, and live lectures delivered by tutors via zoom. There are also daily meetings via zoom. The course lectures are designed to ensure that the requirements of EU2019/624 Annex II paragraph 3 a to x are covered.
 
The course follows a logical chronological sequence, beginning with legislation, background, and abattoir requirements, antemortem inspection, postmortem inspection, enforcement of legislation and final examination. The OV designation course also includes the University of Bristol Animal Welfare Officer and Poultry Welfare Officer courses and provides you with these extra certificates as part of the whole course. These latter qualifications are recognised by major retailers (for their auditors), charities, and other Non-Government Organisations (NGO’s) such as the soil association and RSPCA.
  
Although technically an “on-line” course, it should be noted that daily in-person zoom meetings are held; the antemortem scenarios, Animal Welfare Course, Poultry Welfare Course and Enforcement of legislation are delivered live and interactive. The delegates can also contact the main tutors via email and WhatsApp during and after the course.
 
Examinations during the course are conducted using a mobile application, PointSolutions, allowing delegates to answer multiple choice questions using their mobile devices.
