Description
Cabot and Bristol's Age of Discovery: The Bristol Discovery Voyages 1480 -1508
John Cabot's voyage to North America in 1497, on the Matthew of Bristol, has long been famous. But who was Cabot? Why did he come to Bristol? And what did he achieve? In this book, the two leading historians of the Bristol discovery voyages draw on their recent research and new discoveries to tell the story of the voyages of exploration launched from Bristol at this time. The Venetian Zuan Chabotto (John Cabot), lies at the heart of this story. But his three expeditions are set in the context of the discovery enterprises funded and led by Bristol's merchants over many decades. The book is written for the general reader and is richly illustrated to bring the fruits of the University of Bristol's acclaimed Cabot Project to the wider public.

Irishman Sir Robert Hart was the Inspector General of China's Imperial Maritime Customs from 1863 to 1911. An employee of China's ruling Qing dynasty, he played a crucial role in the economic development of the country and in its interaction with foreign powers. He was, professionally, a man who bridged two worlds, British and Chinese, and he also did so privately. Hart had two families: his wife Hester and their three children, but also, from an earlier relationship with a Chinese woman, Ayao, three children whom Hart had educated in Britain. For China and The World explores the personal and political conflicts that motivated one of the most important foreign figures in Chinese history.
"If you want to understand the British story in China, you have to understand Robert Hart's contribution." Robert Bickers, Professor of History, University of Bristol.
A documentary film on DVD, directed by Jeremy Routledge, Calling the Shots Film Ltd. DVD PAL 31 minutes.
