DescriptionExperience medieval chant, liturgy and monastic training at St Nicholas Church, Brockley You are warmly invited to join University of Bristol Music Department staff and students to spend a day experiencing chant, liturgy, and activities characteristic of medieval monastic life, in Brockley Church BS48 3AX. Schedule (all timings approximate): Arrival and welcome: 10-1030am All participants are invited to join in with singing the liturgical services; no previous experience required; ability to read musical notation is not essential. Additional ItemsMore InformationPlease be aware that there is only one (fairly basic) toilet, in the farmyard about 200 yards from the church. The church floor is uneven in places, and there are narrow steps up into some parts of the building where activities will take place. We will accommodate participants with disabilities wherever possible. All under-18s must be accompanied by a parent or carer, and they must be supervised sufficiently closely to ensure that they engage respectfully with the building, the workshop leaders, and other participants. Between the services, all participants will have the opportunity to join in with a variety of "medieval monastic" experiences, led by Professor Emma Hornby and other Music Department staff and students. The activities may include: learning to write with a quill pen; learning to read and write medieval music notation ("neumes"); using a wax tablet; learning some basic Latin through studying a psalm; learning some complex chant or medieval polyphony to be sung at vespers; doing practical work around the church, reflecting the manual labour that was part of monastic life. You are welcome to spend time sitting quietly in the beautiful church, or exploring outside, if you wish to opt out of any of the activities. Equipment to bring: All necessary music and liturgical texts will be provided. Tea and coffee (including herbal/fruit tea) will be provided throughout the day. If coming by car, please park in the farm yard to the right of the turning circle by the church (it will be signposted). If coming by bus from Bristol, the X1 from Bristol Bus Station at 945am would be ideal, and we recommend that participants seek each other out at the Bus station to join together in buying a "West of England FirstDay Group" ticket, which costs £10 between five people, and covers the return journey as well. (look on the FirstBus App, at the bottom of the ticket menu, under "promotions"). Leave the bus at "Brockley Stores".
