University of Bristol Historic Gardens Book

£7.00

Description

Queries: [email protected]

Commissioned by the University Historic Gardens & Buildings Committee we are proud to showcase the SECOND EDITION of the Historic Gardens Book.

The University of Bristol is the guardian of an impressive range of historic gardens. These include a Civil War fortification at the Royal Fort, an Edwardian flower garden designed for the treatment of hospital patients, and a rare merchant’s eighteenth-century town garden with the most exotic and best-preserved Grotto in the entire country, at Goldney.

Many of the University’s Historic Gardens are attached to halls of residence and can be enjoyed by students and staff alike. It is, however, the purpose of this book to make the wider public, particularly the citizenry of Bristol, aware of what the University owns; and to enable visitors to appreciate its gardens.

Using many original archive resources, this book has been researched and written by Marion Mako, who studied for an MA in Garden History at the University. Lavishly illustrated, it tells the story of gardens and the people who created them. The Second Edition , having proved popular, has been revised with updated images and text. It will be also be available to purchase on guided tours.

£8.00

Description

DIAMONDS, AMMONITES, EXOTIC SHELLS, LIONS & A RIVER GOD!

The guide (Angela Nutbrown) has extensive knowledge of Bristol's history, coupled with an MA in Garden History which provides an in-depth look at the history of the house and review the garden, its features (including the site of the original flag garden, Hercules, the Rotunda, the Bastion, the Tower, Canal and Heritage Orchard).

Access to the Grotto, believed to be one of the finest surviving examples of an eighteenth-century grotto in Britain is highly decorated inside with rare shells, Bristol Diamonds (quartz), minerals with a pillared hall, a rock pool overlooked by a River God and a Lion's Den. Built over 27 years and ornately decorated it forms the centre piece of the garden. Approximately 11 m long by 3.5 m wide it consists of several chambers, divided by pillars encrusted with minerals, rocks and shells. The central chamber houses a life size lion with a lioness sitting in a den behind. The River God is seated at the end of a chamber overlooking a cascaded pool with giant clams. Rare and exotic shells from all over the world are featured in this exotic folly. The roof of the central hall is composed of Bath stone with pseudo-stalactites.

There will be no access to buildings and visitors are advised to wear suitable clothing and footwear. The guide is also a 'blue badge' tour guide for the Southwest.
