Description

Identification of an unfamiliar plant is easier if you know the family to which it belongs. This is a skill that may be learned in the UK and then applied to the flora of any country, anywhere in the world.

These training days would be presented by Dr Paul Smith, a BSc and PhD qualified botanist of 40 years’ post graduate experience, including work for Local Authorities, Natural England, Multi-national consultancies, and the Wildlife Trusts. He is a Senior Associate Teacher with the University of Bristol. A list of Paul’s publications is available here: www.botanicalinvestigations.co.uk. His book on indicator plants is available from the Natural History Book Service. Paul received the Worcestershire Wildlife Trust Wildlife Hero award in 2018 for work relating to habitat restoration. The morning theory session will be spent looking at some flowering plant families and their identification. This will include important characteristics, how to study and store specimens, use of hand lenses, sources of information, how to use an identification key, examination of live specimens, use of a field guide.

The afternoon field session will involve looking at flowering plants in situ in the botanic garden and learning to identify their families from field characters.

Detailed Description

Cancellation Policy: If we cancel a course or workshop, we will give you a minimum of 24 hours notice prior to the start of a workshop with the aim of providing you at least 48 hours notice. If we need to cancel a course, you will receive a full refund, or we will offer you a transfer to another workshop or course, where available. Refunds will be processed as quickly as possible and made via the same method of payment. If you need to cancel a course or workshop, you must inform us 14 days prior to the start date of your course or workshop to receive a full refund. If you provide between 7 and 14 days notice, we will refund 50% of the cost of the course or workshop. No refund will be given if the notice period is less than 7 days prior to the start of the workshop or course.
