Inaugural lecture: Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk

Inaugural lecture: Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk

Description

Inaugural lecture: “The opera that Stalin walked out of: Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, the cold war and #MeToo”

In this inaugural lecture, Professor Pauline Fairclough will talk about Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk. Famous for being the opera that Stalin banned, Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth became a cold-war hit in the West from the 1980s on, with ever-more shocking productions guaranteed box-office success. But has its heady cocktail of sex, violence and murder gone too far, and was it really what Shostakovich wanted?
